Helpful advice for the beginning of summer
St. Gregory of Nyssa, a fourth century bishop comments that the life of a Christian has three distinguishing aspects: deeds, words, and thoughts. Thoughts comes first, then words, and finally actions. Each of us must examine their thoughts, words and deeds, to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from him. According to St. Gregory, they are not in harmony with Christ if they issue from passion. On the other hand, if our thoughts, words, and deeds come from          an untainted passionate inclination, they are directed toward Christ, the author and source of peace. It is then that our life is stamped with the beauty of His thought, the interior elements of the soul and exterior faculties of the body, harmonized in a kind of music. This harmony with Christ is what refreshes the soul during the summer. If you draw from Him, you will show a likeness to Christ, your source and origin, the gleaming water of a pure untainted stream, flowing from the source of life, which is Christ. Happy summer everyone, and please drink plenty of water, the source of all life.

From the Desk of Fr. Trinidad Cuevas

Summer time
Ah summer is finally here full of sun, lots of heat, vacation time and plenty of free time to relax. Personally, this will            be my first summer in New Mexico. They tell me to be prepared because it will be excruciatingly hot. I should drink            lots of water and stay indoors with a nice air conditioner, all necessary tactics to survive the summer.
The irony is that the same tactics that apply for a successful safe summer, also applies to the spiritual life. The                        truth is that during the summer we Catholics naturally tend to relax our spiritual life by keeping our guard down              in prayer. Also, our eyes tent to become more keen on certain attractions of the flesh, and sadly, we even tend                        to skip mass ones or twice especially if we are on vacation. The point is that we have a danger of becoming                            more vulnerable.
This is the moment the evil one, (known as the devil) is waiting for, to surprise us when we least expect it and                          make us fall. Over the years I have seen this happen time after time, marriages getting disrupted, kids                                    getting into trouble, issues with money, sudden health surprises, you name it. I’m not saying that this does not                      happen at other times of the year. What I am saying is that when such events happen at other points of the year,                    say during lent or advent or Easter, it is easier to stay focus on prayer precisely  because we are more immersed                  the liturgical time that surrounds us. In the summer we don’t celebrate many liturgical aspects of Christ’s life,                    which makes it all the more necessary to place into practice all the spiritual graces we have received during the year.
This summer I encourage everyone not to relax your spiritual life, in fact, we should double up on our prayers                           so that we can be ready, just in case the evil one attacks.
With God with us, who can be against us. We will have the best summer ever.
God bless you

From the Desk of Fr. Kevin

Brothers and Sisters,
It seems that we are finally entering the summer period. The past few weeks have been busy with Solemnities and extra celebrations. This past June 3rd we celebrated the ordination of Fr. Francis Gyau, which was a beautiful event and quite meaningful for the St. Albert’s parish community. Fr. Francis arrived in Las Cruces some years ago in order to pursue an advanced degree in mathematics. While this was his plan, as usual, God had another. During his time at NMSU he attended Mass here at St. Albert and became involved in the parish community. It was during this time that he began to discern the vocation to the priesthood. After completing his studies in mathematics, he began his studies as a diocesan seminarian. Particularly beautiful is the role the former Pastor of St. Albert, Fr. Ray Flores, played in his formation. It was his encouragement to Francis to consider that the Lord was calling him that eventually led him to listen and be open to this call.  Fr. Francis has been assigned as Parochial Vicar at San Jose in La Mesa and some surrounding parishes and missions. I am sure we will be seeing him at various occasions here at the parish and wish him every blessing in his priesthood.
His story is related to the gospel this weekend. We would often like God to act in our lives through events that we are unable to miss. And yet God chooses to communicate in a different manner. Scripture often uses images of God as one who plants, placing a small seed that need to be nourished. Our relationship with him needs constant attention, water, sun, and at times manure. But this analogy lacks one essential detail: an open ear. We can’t respond to invitations and promptings that we are unaware of. For this reason, the Jewish people recite a line from Deuteronomy three times daily: ‘Shema Israel, Adoni Elohenu, Adoni Ehad,’ meaning ‘Listen Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.’ Every liturgy we have the opportunity to listen. The Word of God is proclaimed and with this Word, God speaks to us, to you and to me. As we enter this summer period, May God grant us the faculty of listening to his Word, that the seed of faith planted in our baptism might grow and bear fruit.

In Christ,
Fr. Kevin

Hermanos y hermanas,

P. Kevin
