    Supporting NMSU FACULTY & Staff

    Hello, friends:

A couple weeks ago Sal and I met with a couple NMSU faculty members in what turned out to be a great brainstorming session about what we could do to further support the folks over at the university. From the conversation a couple of ideas surfaced: the first, to offer a mass in which faculty and staff would be recognized, the second, a monthly mass, followed by lunch and a chat.

We decided to call the service the Crimson Mass, which will be held on Sunday, September 11 at 7:30pm. We're inviting all NMSU and DACC faculty and staff to attend. We would like to both recognize and offer a blessing for the new academic semester. We'd also like to propose a brainstorming lunch, following the Friday 12:10pm mass on September 16. Please bring your ideas of how we can better serve and minister to the university community.

    Kicking Off Faithful Citizenship

    Hello, friends:

Please join me in welcoming all new and returning NMSU and DACC students!

This weekend our parish social ministry group is having a kick off for Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which is an initiative sponsored by the United Stated Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It should be viewed as a teaching document on the political responsibility that we have; it offers guidance and direction, as we prepare to vote in the November elections. If you'd like more information and a list of resources, as you prayerfully discern, please refer to www.faithfulcitizenship.org.

Next Sunday I'll be in Chicago for a very short but important event. A friend of mine, Bro. Joe, is making his formal professions with the Augustinians, at St. Rita shrine. August 28th is the feast of St. Augustine. It's a special day for me as well; I was ordained a deacon, on this day, in 2004. Please keep Bro. Joe in your prayers as he continues his journey and for all of the men and women who are actively discerning a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. This is the same community that Fr. Tom belongs to; I'll also visit Fr. Tom and ask him when he's willing and able to come back and do another parish mission.

    Hello, friends:

A special welcome to new and returning NMSU students, faculty and staff to the fall semester! On behalf of the Newman staff, I’d like to extend our heartfelt welcome; you are at home. Now that the summer months are behind us, it’s time to get back into the rhythm of a more regular routine. Lunch bunch is preparing to start serving meals on the first day of school; we will begin Mass on Campus the following week and all sorts of varied and fun activities are being hosted by Campus Ministry.

Also, most students attending public schools will start class on Monday. We will invite the students and teachers for a special blessing at all of the weekend masses. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin a new semester! Blessings to all of you!

I’d like to invite the NMSU community and all resident parishioners to the annual Mass on the Grass which will take place next Sunday, at 7 p. m., at the horseshoe, right in front of the administration building, on campus. There will not be an evening mass here at Newman on that day!
