From the Desk of Fr. Kevin

Brothers and Sisters,
It seems that we are finally entering the summer period. The past few weeks have been busy with Solemnities and extra celebrations. This past June 3rd we celebrated the ordination of Fr. Francis Gyau, which was a beautiful event and quite meaningful for the St. Albert’s parish community. Fr. Francis arrived in Las Cruces some years ago in order to pursue an advanced degree in mathematics. While this was his plan, as usual, God had another. During his time at NMSU he attended Mass here at St. Albert and became involved in the parish community. It was during this time that he began to discern the vocation to the priesthood. After completing his studies in mathematics, he began his studies as a diocesan seminarian. Particularly beautiful is the role the former Pastor of St. Albert, Fr. Ray Flores, played in his formation. It was his encouragement to Francis to consider that the Lord was calling him that eventually led him to listen and be open to this call.  Fr. Francis has been assigned as Parochial Vicar at San Jose in La Mesa and some surrounding parishes and missions. I am sure we will be seeing him at various occasions here at the parish and wish him every blessing in his priesthood.
His story is related to the gospel this weekend. We would often like God to act in our lives through events that we are unable to miss. And yet God chooses to communicate in a different manner. Scripture often uses images of God as one who plants, placing a small seed that need to be nourished. Our relationship with him needs constant attention, water, sun, and at times manure. But this analogy lacks one essential detail: an open ear. We can’t respond to invitations and promptings that we are unaware of. For this reason, the Jewish people recite a line from Deuteronomy three times daily: ‘Shema Israel, Adoni Elohenu, Adoni Ehad,’ meaning ‘Listen Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.’ Every liturgy we have the opportunity to listen. The Word of God is proclaimed and with this Word, God speaks to us, to you and to me. As we enter this summer period, May God grant us the faculty of listening to his Word, that the seed of faith planted in our baptism might grow and bear fruit.

In Christ,
Fr. Kevin

Hermanos y hermanas,

P. Kevin
