THANK YOU

Hi Friends,

First of all I want to thank you for participating in the Lenten Mission with Fr. Chris Valka. I know that he was happy to be back at Newman to share his thoughts and insights about “generous Dialogue.” I hope that you were able to get it. Too bad I could not be there because of a commitment in Houston. St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Houston had been inviting me to go to their community for their Lenten Mission the last three years. It was until this year that I was able to be with them thanks to Fr. Chris Valka that was willing to come and take my place for a few days. St. Jerome is a predominantly Hispanic community with a few thousand families. I was very impressed during the Sunday masses to see the church full and very active. During the Mission, a few hundred people showed up every day. I was very pleased with the response of the people. I talked to them about “Forgiveness,” how everybody has the need to forgive and to be forgiven. This is the key to be free!

As we come closer to Easter, I invite you to continue meditating in these mysteries of the Passion of Christ and his unconditional love for us. Next weekend is Palm Sunday and the entrance to Holy Week. Come and experience Jesus' entrance to Jerusalem.

BE JOYFUL

Hello Friends,

Join me to welcome Reverend Chris Valka to our community. He is doing all the masses this weekend, plus our Lenten Mission (Monday-Wednesday). I hope that you all take the time to come and learn something from his talks. This time of Lent is another opportunity to have a personal encounter with the Lord. This fourth Sunday of Lent is traditionally known as: "Laetare Sunday," which means "to rejoice,"
"to be joyful." This means that if we allow ourselves to be found by the Lord, our lives are transformed and there is happiness in it. This week I will be praying for you while I give a Lenten Mission in St. Jerome Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. I ask you to pray for me so I can be an instrument of God to bring His message to others.

BEING TESTED AND BEING TRANSFORMED

Hello Friends,

Last weekend I had the opportunity to accompany the Confirmation class on their retreat.  It was a mountain top experience.  That particular Sunday we heard about Abraham's faith being tested at Mt. Moriah.  The gospel was about Jesus' transfiguration.  So in a way these young men and women had two challenges:  being tested and being transformed.
It was such a wonderful experience for all of them to get out of their routine and to spend time meditating about who we are and about our calling to truly be disciples of the Lord.  Thank you all for your prayers.
I want to talk about the Bishop's Annual Appeal- United in Ministry (UIM).  UIM helps many different ministries throughout the diocese; such as: Religious Education, Youth Ministry, Catholic Schools, education for Priests, Deacons, and Seminarians', just to mention a few.  Every parish in the diocese has a goal to meet.  Our goal in 2017 was $92,998.48 (193 families donated) and this year's goal is $89,262.22.  If we come together as a community we can make it easier to reach our goal instead of putting the burden on only those families that have committed to help.  Remember that any help that you give makes a difference.  I pray that God gives you the wisdom and discernment to help us reach our goal.
