Dear Friends,

We are continuing the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew chapters 5:17:29 in our Sunday Gospel readings up until Lent. Jesus states four of his six “antitheses” sayings in today’s Gospel. Like Moses who proclaimed the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, Jesus, the New Moses, delivers his sermon on a mount near the Sea of Galilea now called the Mount of Beatitudes. These sayings begin, “You have heard it said…” and end with, “but I say to you…” His sayings fulfill the law by asking us to go beyond the law as Christians. The standard that he sets is high but not unattainable. He identifies anger as the root of murder and tells us to reconcile with those with whom we are angry, and our enemies. Committing adultery is not only an unfaithful action but also is lust of the eyes and thoughts. Divorce allowed by Moses due to the “hardness of the peoples’ hearts” is eclipsed by Jesus’ teaching on the indissolubility of marriage. He has antitheses for oaths, an “eye for an eye”, and “love your neighbor as yourself” too. As the reading from Sirach proclaims today, “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live.” (Sir 15:15) We are not alone in this choosing with our own freewill to reach beyond the laws of Moses and fulfill these laws with Jesus’ commandment to love. We have guidance from the Holy Spirit. “For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.” (1 Cor 2:10)

(1 Co 2:10)
