In one week we will be celebrating Pentecost and the end of the Easter season. But before we get to Pentecost and the end of the Easter season there’s one solemnity that sadly often time gets overlooked or outright not given importance. I’m speaking about the Solemnity of the Ascension. Why is this Solemnity so important in our understanding of the meaning of Easter and the gift of the Holy Spirit poured upon us on Pentecost? Fundamentally the Ascension is the moment in our earthly existence when Christ joins our human nature with divinity, presenting our mortal flesh to the Father. In other words, Christ being the Son of Man by His union with us and we with our oneness with Christ, become sons and daughters of God. It is the completion of the resurrection and the moment when we become one body with Christ, as the apostle says: ‘Just as the human body, which has many members, is a unity, so it is also with Christ’. Or as St Augustin would say: “Out of compassion for us He descended from heaven, and although He Ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in him by grace. Thus, no one but Christ descended and no one but Christ ascended; not because there is no distinction between the head and the body, but because the body as a unity cannot be separated from the head”. This event witnessed by the apostles opens up the way for the Holy Spirit to descend upon the Church and ultimately upon every single member who invokes upon the Holy Spirit. I encourage all to take a moment and reflect upon this great mystery as we prepare for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
