Dear Friends,

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. Why abstain from meat on obligatory days? When we abstain, we are training our hearts to love God and neighbor by denying ourselves something we want to have such as meat. Eating meat is not a bad action in itself. In fact, eating meat can sustain our bodily life and can be quite tasty and filling. But, the meat in this case represents our priorities. We can have other priorities besides our relationship with God. These priorities become what is most important in our lives. By denying ourselves from eating meat one day a week during this season trains our hearts so we can better expand our love toward what is truly most important our love of Christ and others. According the United States Conference of Catholic bishops, fasting is obligatory for Catholics from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence from meat is obligatory for Catholics from age 14 onwards. http://www.usccb.org/prayerandworship/liturgical year/lent/catholicinformationonlentenfastandabstinence.cfm
