Dear Newman Community, Wow, what an amazing week for our Alternative Spring Break service trip group! Our days in San Diego were long but full of rich experiences. Over the course of the trip we went to Mass and a penance service at the University of San Diego, helped middle school students plant a school garden, visited the U.S.-Mexico border fence at the Pacific Ocean, helped people applying for U.S. citizenship fill out paperwork, painted a classroom and helped with maintenance at two community centers, served dinner to homeless guests at a church, and sorted donations at a thrift store. We were even able to make a day trip to L.A. to visit Homeboy Industries for a tour and lunch at Homegirl Cafe! A big thank you to our very welcoming hosts at the community organizations- Montgomery Middle School, Catholic Charities Immigration Services, Bayside Community Center, So Others May Eat, Homeboy Industries, Catholic Charities Thrift Store, and the Southern Sudanese Community Center. More on our trip in future weeks! Peace, Mona | |
