Serving Others is Core to Our Faith

Dear Newman Community,

The semester is off and running! The Campus Ministry calendar is getting more full by the day as students and staff plan for recurring and new ministry events. These events and activities typically fall under one of several areas of ministry as part of our comprehensive approach to campus ministry: Retreats, Mass & Liturgy, Spiritual Growth, Campus Outreach, Socials, and Social Justice & Service.

In the area of Social Justice, we are offering a monthly service opportunity called Service Saturdays. On the first Saturday of the month students will visit one of two local organizations in our community- Camp Hope tent city and Casa del Sol nursing center.
These visits will be an opportunity for students to respond to the call to serve the “least of these,” a call based in Scripture (Matthew 25) and echoed in Pope Francis’ encouragement to reach out to those on the “margins” of society.

We may typically think of charity/service as donating clothing or serving food, however, students engaging in Service Saturdays will give something just as, if not more precious, their time and presence. We hope the conversations and interactions they have with the people at Casa del Sol and Camp Hope will be a tangible experience of several core teachings of our Catholic faith:

-We are all made in the image and likeness of God and are all deserving of respect, regardless of gender, age, social status, etc.

-While it is tempting to think first of ‘I’ and ‘me’, we are instead called to think of ‘we,’ of the larger community we are a part of, called to ask what is best for the common good.

Please pray for us as we move out of our comfort zones to meet people we might not normally meet and go places we might not normally go. In the spirit of this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we find the courage to be merciful like the Father (Lk 6:37-38).

Peace,
Mona

The Goodness of Rest & the New Semester

Greetings Newman Community!

After a long Christmas break, the Spring Semester has finally begun!  The first order of business in prepping for the new semester was gathering our student ministry team for a day of reflection and planning this past Tuesday.  Our calendar of events is filling in quite nicely and we trust that the Spirit will fill and enliven the many events we are planning: Tuesday Mass on
Campus, Mid-Week Mass and Dinner, Thursday Night Theology gatherings, Aggie Awakening VIII, Service Saturdays, and the Spring Break Service Trip to list a few. We are looking forward to a busy semester in Campus Ministry!

In addition to planning, we spent time prayerfully reflecting on the blessings of a good, restful Christmas break.  The Gospel story (Luke 9:28-36) of Jesus leading the disciples up the mountain top where they witnesses Jesus’ meeting with Moses and Elijah served as our source of inspiration.  As we look to a new semester, a new year, I invite student and resident parishioners alike to read the passage and reflect on the Christmas holiday.  A couple of reflection points to ponder:

1) The disciples recognized that it was good to be on the mountaintop with Jesus, Moses and Elijah – Peter even offered to build tents so they could stay longer – what goodness did you experience during this break that you would of wanted to
build a tent around?

2) What of your time this break/time away from school will you continue to ponder in the silence of your heart in the coming weeks?  And how do you anticipate it influencing your study, prayer, work, and/or ministry efforts this semester?

We will be sending out prayers for a successful semester for our university community, and ask that you all keep our ministry efforts in your prayers as well!

Peace,
Sal

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year, happy new semester!

Welcome back students, faculty and staff! While it is always good to have time away from the university, it is also good to be back responding to the call to learning, growth, and development. I hope your Christmas break has been restful so you are rejuvenated for a new semester, no doubt soon to be abounding with classes, assignments, and many other activities.

Campus Ministry staff and students leaders are also back and getting ready for the new semester. This week we will be gathering with our Student Leadership Team for our spring retreat, a time to reconnect, pray, and plan for the spring semester. We pray the coming months are going to be full of rich opportunities to grow in our relationships with God and one another, including an Alternative Spring Break service trip and our eighth Aggie Awakening retreat.

Please keep our university community and campus ministry in prayer as we embark on this journey!

Peace,
Mona
