Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas!!

I always appreciate the respite while students are away for break during the Christmas holiday. The hectic season is different from the day to day ministry during the semester, but there is ample time for planning, reflecting and praying. Of course this week, the focus is on family and celebrating the birth of our Savior. As I reflect on the many ways Christ is born anew in our world, I’d like to share this reflection by Fr. Andy from Creighton Online Ministries:

Our religious memory reminds us of why we celebrate Christmas. We could be imagining the holy couple - Joseph and Mary - having made their way to Bethlehem, late and with nowhere to stay. Today, the scene can become very vivid for us, whether we plan to celebrate Midnight Mass tonight or to celebrate tomorrow morning. The crib scene has a story. Our Savior - God with us - did not come into a wonderful palace, like the one David built. Jesus was born into a very lowly place. This is the wonderful sign of God's self-emptying. This is how God chose to come and be among us - as a new born baby, in a manger, a feeding trough. Our Savior comes in this way, and it can become most meaningful today, if we let ourselves chew this good news, in the midst of whatever we are doing. It can mean so much if we let it. It can be a part of what we celebrate tonight and tomorrow. Yes, there might be people and parties, and there might be gifts shared. But, we can be filled with something our world will likely not be celebrating - that our God is a God who desires to meet us in the lowliest places in our lives. God with us, Jesus, comes to "save his people from their sins."

Let us approach the manger of our salvation tonight and tomorrow with great openness to the graces each of us can yet hope for and receive - for our own inner peace, and that we might bring peace to others in our lives, because of what we ourselves have embraced.

Peace,
Sal

Dear Newman Community,

What a fun couple of weeks it's been with campus ministry! During finals week I always give the students a hard timeI tell them, I know they're so stressed with final exams but it's one of my favorite weeks of the semester... We pause for Taize prayer and breakfast, recognize our graduates at the Grad Mass, and celebrate Christmas early with a fun party!

This year the students on our Socials Ministry Team decided to revamp our Christmas party with some new ideas. The result was a hilarious evening! See the photos for some of the cheer including prayer around the nativity scene plus contests to create pantyhose & balloon reindeer antlers and toilet paper snowmen.

Hoping your Advent is as full of hope and joy,
Mona

Advent Greetings Newman Community!

Well, it is already time to wrap up the semester. It has been a busy and full one! Some highlights include Aggie Awakening, Lunch Bunch for a Cause, in support of the Aggie Cupboard, participation in the Border Mass, and Newman Nights. Casa Amistad continues to be a warm house of hospitality with regular and consistent traffic. We appreciate all your support, and ask that you continue to keep campus ministry in your prayers.

Peace,
Sal
A Prayer for Graduates

Good and gracious God,
grant me faith & courage and put purpose in my days.
Show me how to serve you in effective ways,
so my education, my knowledge and my skill
May find true fulillment as I learn to do your will.
May I ever be aware in everything I do,
that knowledge comes from learning,
and all wisdom comes from You.
Amen.

Dear Newman Community,

It's hard to believe it's already here- the end of another semester! Please keep all students, faculty and staff in prayer as they gear up for finals week. We will be hosting a couple of different finals week activities to help relieve some stress...

Monday at 8pm we'll encourage students to take a break from studying for Taize prayer (think quiet, meditative prayer) and breakfast at Newman. Thursday at 12:10pm at the NMSU Spiritual Center we will have a Holy Day Mass on Campus for the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Thursday at 7pm we will have our Newman Christmas party featuring lots of food and the ever popular White Elephant gift exchange.

Please also keep in thought and prayer all students graduating next Saturday. We are excited to join our graduates in celebrating your accomplishment with Mass and a special recognition this Sunday, December 4 at 7:30pm. Students, feel free to invite your family and friends to join us for Mass followed by a simple reception.

Peace,
Mona
Prayer Before An Exam

Dear Lord, as I take this exam,
I thank you that my value
Is not based on my performance
But on your great love for me.
Come into my heart so that we can
walk through this time together.
Help me, not only with this test,
But the many tests of life
that are sure to come my way.
As I take this exam, bring back to my mind
everything I studied and be gracious
with what I have overlooked.
Help me to remain focused and calm,
Confident in the facts and in my ability,
And firm in the knowledge that no matter
what happens today you are there with me.
Amen.
