Full Moon Mass at White Sands

Dear Newman Community,

Next week, on Thursday, October 5th, we have one of my favorite Newman events– Full Moon Mass at White Sands National Monument. Students are invited to drive out to White Sands in the late afternoon for food and fun on the sand dunes. Our student leaders organize group games like volleyball, soccer, or Frisbee.  Some  students race each other down the dunes on sleds. Still others stroll leisurely through the dunes as the sun goes down. Campus Ministry provides a simple dinner for the students as they enjoy the dunes. After the sun sets we gather together for Mass in the beautiful dunes under the full moon. We head back for Las Cruces after Mass.

Good news– this wonderful gathering is not only for students but for resident parishioners as well! Campus Ministry does provide dinner specifically for students so if you join us, please plan to bring your own picnic dinner. You are welcome to meet us out at White Sands around dinner time. We will be near the Group Use Area (map at right). The sunset time is 6:45pm so we will plan to have Mass at 8pm. There is a $5 per person park entrance fee.

Feel free to call with any questions.  Phone at Casa Amistad (student house): 575-449-4537.

Peace,
Mona

Reaching Out on Social Media

Dear Newman Community,

A group of our student leaders have been working to improve our Campus Ministry presence on social media. While the idea of online ministry may be new to some of us, the students believe strongly in the importance of this type of outreach. Thankfully, they also have the skills to engage in this way of spreading the Gospel. Below and right is an example of a ’Member Monday’ post, a series they are doing via Instragram to introduce members of our ministry to one another. If you want to see more, look us up on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat,  all at NMSUCatholic.

Happy Monday! Take a moment to get to know our Servant Leader, Nick! He is from El Paso, Texas and graduated from Del Valle High School. He is 20 years old, majoring in Journalism and Mass Media. He hopes to have careers in photography, graphic design, and public relations, and hopefully work at Dynamic Catholic. (How cool is that!?) He enjoys taking pictures, being artsy and crafty, and hanging with friends! He heard about NMSU Catholic from his priest n El Paso, and he has now been with us for 2 years! Nick describes NMSU Catholic as “a ‘safe haven’ community where you can be yourself and express your thoughts on faith. It keeps you on track with your faith and has a positive impact on your life.” #MemberMonday

Peace,
Mona

Laboring at the Start of a New Year

9/3/2017

Dear Newman Community,

Happy Labor Day weekend! Campus Ministry students and staff have indeed been laboring quite a bit lately to make sure we start the school year off right. And what a start it has been! At our first Midweek Mass & Dinner, our weekly Mass and dinner on Wednesdays, we had over 30 students gather. This is a high number for this event, especially for our first dinner  of the semester.
This past week our Servant Leader Council, our core student leader group, also put on an evening retreat called Newman at Nite. The students planned a full schedule beginning with Mass and dinner, followed by talks and small group sharing on keeping faith in college and the importance of community. The night wouldn’t be complete without fun activities, so the group went on campus for a high spirited game of capture the flag! We closed the evening with a Taize prayer service. Please keep Campus Ministry in prayer as the semester continues!

Peace,
Mona

Prayer for the Work of Our Hands

Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of all that is good, for in your mercy you give us work that we may be co-creators with you.
By imitating you, our God and Maker, we continue to share the world,  to name it and claim it and be good stewards of your good gifts through the life-giving Spirit that renews the earth.
Keep us mindful of the power you share with us that we may create only that which leads to peace.
