Dear Newman Community, The students are gearing up for Campus Ministry’s biggest event of the semester– the Aggie Awakening Retreat! Coming up the weekend of October 20-22, the retreat is a great opportunity for students to get away from the busy-ness and stress of school and work to grow in relationship with God and others. Over three days at Holy Cross Retreat Center in Mesilla Park, the retreatants experience a series of faith talks, prayer opportunities, and time with fellow students. The retreat is put on by students for students. We typically have about 30 students serve as ‘staff’ for the retreat. The staff put in countless hours the weeks before the retreat to help make sure the weekend is a rich spiritual experience for their peers. Please join me in praying for these generous, hardworking students as they enter the busiest part of prep for Awakening. Do you know a student who might like to attend the retreat? Please encourage them to contact the director of the retreat, Justine Del Castillo, at [email protected] for more info and/or to sign up. Peace, Mona |

![]() Dear Newman Community, Have you ever wondered where the ‘Newman’ in Newman Center comes from? It comes from John Henry Newman, who we remember this week on October 9th. Newman Centers and Newman Clubs across the nation are named after John Henry Cardinal Newman, campus ministry’s patron. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) is a famous convert to Catholicism. He wrote extensively on the role of a Catholic university, conscience, and the laity. In 1883 Catholic students attending public colleges and universities began to gather as Catholic communities on campus. In 1908 the first national Catholic student association was established. The association was named after Cardinal Newman- the National Newman Club Federation. Our own ‘Newman Club’ at New Mexico State University was founded in 1930– nearly 100 years ago! Cardinal Newman was beatified (the final stage before being recognized as a Saint) in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. Please join me in praying for Newman Centers and Campus Ministries across the United States and offering a word of thanksgiving to Cardinal Newman for inspiring the Newman Movement! Peace, Mona Dear Newman Community,
When was the last time you went to a drive in movie? The smell of popcorn in the air, a cool breeze flowing by, the excitement of a fun evening with friends... Students, you're in luck, this time could be coming up soon! On Saturday, October 7th at 8:30pm, our students leaders are putting on an outdoor movie night! We'll be setting up a large screen in the church parking lot to watch 'The Force Awakens.' Campus Ministry is providing the popcorn, drinks and candy, you bring a chair and/or blanket! Another fun gathering we have coming up soon is Pizza at Padre's. On Wednesday, October 15th, we will gather for daily Mass at the Newman Center then head over to Fr. Alex's house for homemade pizza. Students, save these dates and plan to invite a friend! Peace, Mona |
