Walking Rosary on Campus

8/28/2016

Greetings!

We are off and running for the 2016 Fall Semester. Last Sunday’s Mass on the Grass was a beautiful celebration! The gathered faithful, numbering 350, joined in prayer and thanksgiving in the heart of campus. Fr. Ray even brought out the incense as he offered a prayer for God’s continued blessing on our campus at the beginning of Mass.

In an effort to keep the needs of the campus community in prayer, we invite student and resident parishioners to join us in a weekly walking rosary on campus. We will meet every Monday morning at 10:30 am near the sundial on the east end of the horseshoe. We have met up the past two weeks, beginning our praying of the rosary together, then dispersing to pray the five decades in silence as each individual walks around campus. Walking around campus has helped me notice the many people involved in educating and forming students. Praying the rosary is a simple, yet powerful way to lift the needs and concerns of the administrators, custodians, professors, construction workers, maintenance and grounds personnel, office workers, food service employees and students that make up our campus community. If you have, or are aware of any particular needs or concerns, please email them to [email protected] and we will include them in walking rosary.

Peace,
Sal

Buzz of the New School Year

8/14/2016

Greetings!

The new school year is upon us! Students living on campus have officially moved back in, including the many freshman beginning their NMSU experience. Classes begin on Wednesday, so Newman should be buzzing next week with students returning to worship over the weekend, be sure to give them a warm Newman welcome back! We will celebrate the beginning of the school year with our annual Mass on the Grass. All are invited to join us on Sunday, August 21 at 7 pm to gather around the Eucharistic table and celebrate God’s presence on our campus.

Newman will also be abuzz during the lunch hours, 11-1pm with student activity on weekdays as Lunch Bunch gets back in gear. This past Tuesday, Bonnie, who serves as the Lunch Bunch Coordinator, 22 volunteers, Fr. Ray, Mona and myself gathered for a morning of preparation and prayer. A representative from the Health Department offered a presentation on safe food handling, so you can rest assured that the meals will be delicious and safe! We also took time to offer prayers of thanksgiving for the many volunteers who give so generously in service to the important Ministry of hospitality. We also prayerfully reflected on the vital role faith plays in our commitment of service. It is indeed our relationship to Christ, nourished in Word and Sacrament that calls us to serve . The unexpected grace of service is that, as the Prayer of St. Francis reminds us, it is in giving that we receive. So, as the Lunch Bunch crew works to prepare and serve meals with a generous spirit of hospitality, we trust that they will encounter Christ’s presence through their service and in the students they serve. Please keep their efforts in your prayers! And, help us spread the word about this great ministry!

Peace,
Sal

Bring His Light to Campus

Greetings!

August is here and the beginning of another school year is just days away! As NMSU and DACC campuses gear up for the busy-ness of a new semester, we too are ready to welcome  students to St. Albert and NMSU Catholic Campus Ministry.  Mona and I are preparing for a retreat for the student members of the ministry team, which begins this Friday at Holy Cross Retreat Center.  We will spend time in prayerful reflection on Jesus’ call to share his love and mercy with our campus communities and planning the initiatives and events that respond to His call. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us in our preparations!

We have already reserved space on the NMSU Horseshoe for our annual celebration of Mass on the Grass.  The first Mass of the year on campus has become a much anticipated event for our parish community and provides a great opportunity to gather as a community of faith to celebrate Mass and to pray for the needs of our students, faculty, staff and administration.  In addition to the all the excitement and anxiety a new academic year brings, the current situation on campus, namely the budget cuts that are affecting many departments, programs and individuals calls for our prayer.  All are invited to join us on Sunday, August 21 at 7 pm to gather around the Eucharistic table, celebrate God’s presence on our campus, and to ask for the courage to bring His light to campus in all we do this year!

Peace,
Sal
