OCIA FAQs (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults)
General Information
What is OCIA?
OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, the new name for what was previously known as RCIA. As of Advent 2024, the Church began using "Order" to better reflect the communal nature of the process—a journey of discernment alongside others who are exploring the Catholic faith.
Who is OCIA for?
OCIA is for adults who:
Are unbaptized and seeking to become Catholic.
Are baptized Christians from other traditions who want to become Catholic.
Are baptized Catholics who have not yet received First Communion or Confirmation.
Is OCIA only for people who are sure they want to become Catholic?
Not at all. Many people begin OCIA simply seeking answers or clarity. You’re welcome to come, ask questions, and take the journey at your own pace. There is no pressure—just support, prayer, and a community walking with you.
Logistics & Registration
When and where do OCIA sessions meet?
Sessions are held Tuesday nights from 7:00–9:00 PM at St. Albert’s. New groups begin at the start of each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). If Tuesday nights don’t work for you, we’re happy to explore alternative options.
How long does the OCIA process last?
Most people complete the process in about two semesters, but the pace can vary depending on your journey.
How do I register?
You can register during the first week of OCIA—there’s no cost to attend. To get started, fill out the form above or email Patty Carrasco, who will send you reminders and location details as the start date approaches.
Who Can Participate?
Can non-students join the program?
Our OCIA program is primarily geared toward students at New Mexico State or DACC, and they are our first priority. However, all in our local community are welcome to participate. Reach out to Patty for more details
Spiritual Approach
Is there pressure to convert?
No. Our goal is to support you in discerning God’s will for your life. Whether you’re exploring, unsure, or ready to commit, we’re here to pray with you, answer your questions, and walk with you wherever you are in your faith journey.
What’s the best advice for someone thinking about joining?
Here’s what some past participants shared:
“Just show up to one class—God may speak to you in unexpected ways.”
“Keep an open heart and ask questions—don’t be afraid to wrestle with doubts.”
“Don’t limit what God can do in your life. He may surprise you.”
“Even if you don’t feel ready, just know He is waiting for you with open arms.”
“Embrace relationships with others in the program—you’re not alone.”
“Pray often and ask the Lord to guide your heart honestly and openly.”
“No pressure—just try it out. You can always decide later if it’s right for you.”
“There’s a reason you’re curious. Trust that God might be inviting you to explore more.”
Is it okay to come even if I’m not sure it’s for me?
Yes! Many participants started out unsure. There’s no obligation to continue if you decide it’s not the right fit—but just showing up can be the first step in a powerful journey.
