Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

What is Adoration?

Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament is a time of prayer and worship before Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist (John 6). This practice is rooted in the earliest days of the Church, though formal Eucharistic Adoration became more widespread in the 1500s. Many choose to make a “holy hour” in response to Jesus’ heartfelt request during His agony in the garden: “Could you not spend one hour with me?” (Matthew 26). Whether it's a minute, thirty, or a full hour, Adoration is an opportunity to be in prayerful communion with Jesus—sharing your heart, your joys, your struggles, and simply being present with Him.

Even when the Eucharist is not exposed in a monstrance, you can still pray in the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle. A holy hour can be made anytime you sit in silence with the Lord—He waits for us in every tabernacle throughout the world.

What should I do during Adoration?

You don’t need to worry about what to say—just being in Jesus’ presence is powerful. St. John Vianney once asked a parishioner what he did during Adoration, and the man replied, “I look at Him and He looks at me.” Many people reflect on their lives, express gratitude, or seek strength for conversion. Reading Scripture or writings of the saints can be deeply enriching, especially when reflected upon in the presence of the Eucharist. At St. Albert’s, you’ll find spiritual reading materials in Casa A to look through.

Adoration is also a time of reverent worship. To preserve a prayerful environment, please refrain from eating, drinking (except water), talking, playing music out loud, or lying in the aisles. Though Adoration is a personal moment with Jesus, it's also a communal experience—let’s help one another encounter Him in peace.

Do I need to bring anything to Adoration?

Nothing is required except your presence. Some find it helpful to bring a Bible, a journal, or a rosary, but Jesus receives us as we are. It's not about having a to-do list—it’s about opening your heart to His love. Bring what helps you focus, but don’t let anything distract you from the One who is truly present.
