Hello Newman Community! Earlier this month I had the opportunity to travel to Chicago for a meeting with Catholic Extension and other lay ministers from parishes across the U.S. The gathering was brief but full. While our places and types of ministry are varied, (the group came from Alaska all the way to Maine and serve in campus ministry, youth ministry, and Hispanic ministry), the group was eager to celebrate and share the joys of our shared mission. This was especially evident in the special Mass held on the last day of our trip to recognize and commission those of us who have participated in the Initiative for the last three years. As a reminder of this joy, celebration, and blessing, each leader was given a bottle of water from the Rio Grande that has been blessed by Pope Francis. Many thanks to Catholic Extension for supporting our parish and campus ministry as we strive to share the joy of the Gospel. Peace, Mona | For over 100 years, Extension has partnered with generous donors to grow the Catholic Church in mission dioceses (financially poor dioceses) across the nation. One way they do this today is through the Hispanic Lay Leadership Initiative (HLLI), in which Extension partners with parishes and dioceses to create new lay leadership ministry positions. Our parish has been fortunate to be part of this Initiative since January 2013, adding a second full time professional campus minster position so we are better able to serve the campus community of NMSU/DACC. Greetings! It seems as though the campus community has found a rhythm to the semester. An important part of that rhythm for a growing number of students, faculty and staff is gathering for Mass every Tuesday during the noon hour on campus. This weekly Mass offers a great opportunity for our faith community to come together at the NMSU Spiritual Center to praise and worship Christ in the Eucharist. Gathering on campus also serves as a reminder that God's sanctifying presence can be found in all places. We are also reminded that we are called to live out Gospel values while engaging in teaching, learning, research, public service and campus life at NMSU and DAC. We hope that the crowd continues to grow, so if you are around the East end of campus on Tuesday afternoons, stop by the Spiritual Center and join us for Mass on Campus! Peace, Sal Happy Labor Day! Although school at NMSU and DACC has been in session for several weeks, the welcome activities are still in full swing. Last Tuesday we participated in AggieFest, a fun showcase of student organizations and departments. Students who stopped by at our table were greeted by campus ministry students and… Pope Francis! Well, a cardboard cut-out of Pope Francis. It was a great opportunity to connect with new students and share about upcoming events at Newman. This weekend campus ministry staff and students are helping with parking duty for the annual Franciscan Festival of Fine Arts at Holy Cross Retreat Center. It’s a great outdoor festival celebrating art, food, and community in the beauty of the outdoors. The festival runs Saturday from 9am til 5pm and Sunday from 10am til 4pm. If you go, be sure to check out the new labyrinth Sal and a group of students helped put in over the summer. It’s located near the chapel and Rosary Walk. Enjoy your holiday weekend! Mona Greetings!
We are a good week and half into the fall semester, and it is hard not to notice the return of all the NMSU/DACC students as our Church is a bit fuller for the weekend Masses. While I enjoy the slower, quieter pace of the summer months, I appreciate the energy and enthusiasm students inject into our parish community. Welcome back students, we are truly blessed by your return! Mona and I are taking a different approach to filling the campus ministry space in the bulletin this semester. Rather than solely post information on upcoming events, we’d like to use this space to share the Good News happening in Campus Ministry. Each year before the semester begins, the students who will serve on our Student Campus Ministry Team gather for a week of prayer, planning, and playing together. This year we spent time at San Patricio Retreat Center reflecting on our baptismal call to be priest, prophet and king in the context of our ministry to the university community. The students on this year’s team (pictured at the right with Mona and Fr. Alex) are a very dedicated and faithful group! Please keep them and all of our efforts to share Christ’s presence through campus ministry in prayer. Peace! Sal |
