I hope the ‘Teaching Masses’ are helping all of you to enter into a deeper active participation in the Holy Mass. There are parts during the Mass that are assigned to clergy, and parts assigned to the people all gathered together in worship. Among the parts assigned to the priest, the foremost is the Eucharistic Prayer, which is the high point of the entire celebration. Next are the orations. They are: the collect, the prayer over the offerings, and the prayer after Communion. These prayers are addressed to God in the name of the entire holy people of God and all present, by the priest who presides over the assembly in the person of Christ. It is with good reason, therefore, that they are called the “presidential prayers” because they are prayed by the presider. During the Introductory Rites, the priest prays the collect prayer. The collect introduces the character of that particular Mass celebration. The character may be set in the way God is addressed, the deeds for which God is praised, or in the specific petition. The priest says, Let Us Pray. Both he and the people pause in silence. The priest and the people are in silence together so that they may be conscious of the fact that they are in God’s presence and may formulate their petitional prayers to God mentally. The collect gathers the petitional prayers of everyone into one prayer and disposes everyone to hear the word of God throughout the celebration. Then the priest says the collect prayer addressing God in the name of the people. The people, uniting themselves to this humble request, make the prayer their own with the acclamation, Amen. The moment of silence, recalling they are in God’s presence and calling to mind petitions, and the response Amen are all active participation by the people.

Espero que las "Misas de Enseñanza" os ayuden a todos a participar en una participación activa más profunda en la Santa Misa. Hay partes durante la misa que se asignan al clero, y partes asignadas a las personas todas juntas en adoración. Entre las partes asignadas al sacerdote, la más importante es la oración eucarística, que es el punto culminante de toda la celebración. Las siguientes son las oraciones. Son: la recolección, la oración sobre las ofrendas, y la oración después de la Comunión. Estas oraciones están dirigidas a Dios en el nombre de todo el pueblo santo y de todos los presentes, por el sacerdote que preside la asamblea en la persona de Cristo. Es con razón, por lo tanto, que se les llama las "oraciones presidenciales." Durante los ritos introductorios, el sacerdote reza la oración de recolección. La colección introduce el carácter de esa celebración de la Misa en particular. Happy New Year to all of you! Yes, I said Happy New Year since it is the beginning of another liturgical year. The first Sunday of Advent marks the new year of the Church. So we have entered into this time of Advent, and although we might associate the color purple with a time of penance, fasting, and preparation, we are called to joyfully journey toward the feast of Christmas and the fullness of the kingdom of God. The responsorial psalm calls us to “go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.” During this time, we are called to pause and attune all of our senses to what really matters: Christ present in our midst and the kingdom of heaven being built here and now. That is why the evangelist Matthew invites us to “Stay awake!” St. Paul echoes those same words of Jesus to “stay awake” in his letter to the Romans. He tells them, “It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep.” Advent is a season for preparation. Amid the physical preparations for Christmas, how would you like to prepare spiritually for the feast of Christ’s nativity?

Feliz Año Nuevo a todos ustedes! Sí, dije Feliz Año Nuevo ya que es el comienzo de otro año litúrgico. El primer domingo de Adviento marca el nuevo año de la Iglesia. Así que hemos entrado en este tiempo de Adviento, y aunque podríamos asociar el color púrpura con un tiempo de penitencia, ayuno y preparación, estamos llamados a viajar alegremente hacia la fiesta de la Navidad y la plenitud del reino de Dios. El salmo responsorial nos llama a "ir con alegría al encuentro del Señor". Durante este tiempo, estamos llamados a hacer una pausa y a sintonizar todos nuestros sentidos con lo que realmente importa: Cristo presente en medio de nosotros y el reino de los cielos que se está construyendo aquí y ahora. Es por eso que el evangelista Mateo nos invita a "Permanecer despiertos!" San Pablo se hace eco de las mismas palabras de Jesús de "permanecer despierto" en su carta a los romanos. Les dice: "Ya es la hora de que despierten del sueño". El Adviento es una temporada para la preparación. En medio de los preparativos físicos para la Navidad, cómo les gustaría prepararse espiritualmente para la fiesta del nacimiento de Cristo?
