Dear Newman Community, Last weekend a group of students and I drove to El Paso for the annual Border Mass. Hosted by the Dioceses of Las Cruces, El Paso, and Juarez, the Mass is an opportunity for Catholics living on the border to come together to remember the migrants who have died crossing the border. This year’s Mass was held at the canal in Chihuahuita, a community in downtown El Paso. When we arrived it became clear the canal runs through a very active community, filled with homes, businesses, and life on both sides of the border. Bishop Seitz, from the Diocese of El Paso, shared in his homily that (paraphrase) while borders, whether the borders on a soccer field or between countries, serve a purpose our faith calls us to consider them also as bridges, and opportunity for encounter and unity. He reminded us that we are all one in faith, regardless of which side of the border we live on, all headed to the same home with God. Bishop Seitz also challenged us to consider how God crossed a border, through Jesus in the incarnation, to be with us, out of love for us, and how we are called to respond by following in the footsteps of Jesus. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make this happen staff at the diocesan pastoral centers as well as member of the border patrol who were very gracious and supportive. Greetings!
Even though the temperature is still hovering in the 70’s and 80’s, Thanksgiving is just around the corner…. and that means time to bake and sell some PIES!!! We will again be baking and selling delicious Pecan, Apple, CranApple and Pumpkin Pies. We will take prepaid orders after all the Masses next weekend, November 11 & 12 and will have pies ready for sale and pick up on the 18 & 19th. This is the major fundraiser for Campus Ministry that helps support our CM programming budget. In order to maximize the fundraiser, we will also have a sign up for ingredient donations on the 11 and 12th. We appreciate your support! Peace, Sal
Greetings!
Kudos to the Oktoberfest committee for all their efforts in making the fiesta an enjoyable and successful event! Our contribution was providing the brats, dogs, and burgers, and we were busy! As we welcome the Fall season, we are looking forward to some of our marquee events: · Aggie Awakening 9 is scheduled for October 21-23 at Holy Cross Retreat Center. The Awakening staff is busy preparing for this great retreat experience. If you know of a student, or are a student interested in attending the retreat, send an email to Luigi at nmsucatholiccampusministry@gmail to get registered. · Pie Sales! It’s never too early to be thinking about some delicious Pecan, Apple, Cran-Apple and Pumpkin Pies. We will take orders on November 11 & 12 and will have pies ready on the 18 & 19th. · Full Moon Mass at White Sands is set for Sunday, October 16th. Folks interested in car pooling are invited to meet at Newman at 3:30 pm. We will celebrate Mass on the dunes in the Primrose picnic area at 7:30 pm. All are invited to come out to praise and worship God in the splendor of the dunes! For more info, email me at sal@stalbertnewmancenter.org. Peace, Sal
Dear Newman Community,
From what I have heard from speaking with campus ministers from other universities, read in news reports, and personally experienced, this generation of youth and young adults has a heart for service! According to the Millennial Impact Report, 70% of millennials volunteered at least one hour in 2014. Here at Newman, we see students generously giving of their time (much more than one hour!) to help with retreats, faith sharing groups, shared meals, and more. Soon students will also serve others in our local community as we begin our Service Saturday series for the semester. On one Saturday a month, students will partner with groups and organizations both on and off campus to serve some of the people most in need in our community. We’ll kick off Service Saturdays on September 24th by teaming up with other NMSU student groups to care for God’s creation as we clean up campus with the annual Keep State Great event. Other Saturdays will include visits with the homeless residents of Camp Hope tent city and elderly residents of Casa del Sol nursing home. We’ll also explore a new opportunity in November, which we are calling a Yard Clean Up to Benefit Our Troops. The idea is students will help do yard work and other tasks for our elderly parishioners, we’ll accept donations from parishioners served for the students’ time, and we’ll pass the donations on as care packages to parishioners serving in the military. More details on this exciting new venture to come! Peace, Mona Greetings!
Campus Ministry staff and students are once again hosting Lunch Bunch for a Cause on Monday September 12th and 26th. Over the years, this event has brought together students and parishioners looking for a good, filing meal; a local, national, or global cause; and Campus Ministry students working in the Newman kitchen. The meal is prepared and served in lieu of the regular Lunch Bunch menu and diners are asked to offer at least the same amount they would typically pay for Lunch Bunch, $2 for students and $4 for all others. Of course, any extra donations are appreciated! We will be serving Beef Burritos smothered in a Green Chile sauce, rice, beans and desert. This semester, all proceeds will benefit The Aggie Cupboard. The Aggie Cupboard offers emergency food assistance to NMSU and DACC students, staff and faculty. It is located in Regents Row, Room B114 on the main campus, with food distribution on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 pm. As the majority of the food offered for distribution comes from community donations, all funds raised from our Lunch Bunch for a Cause will meet a direct need. While conversing with Lori Martinez, NMSU social worker who oversees the Aggie Cupboard, we identified another potential area for collaboration. We figured we could get the word out about this great Newman ministry outreach to those in our campus community in most need by offering a pre-paid meal ticket that could be distributed in Aggie Cupboard food bags. By doing so, students in need who don’t typically come to Lunch Bunch might come and having enjoyed a meal and the warm hospitality offered by LB volunteers would return themselves and maybe invite a friend or two! If you would like to assist in our efforts, come by on Monday between 11 and 1:15, or contact me via the parish office (575-522-6202) to purchase pre-paid meal tickets. Peace, Sal
